Built in Germany, the JOHN DEERE 6400 was launched in 1992 as a replacement for the JOHN DEERE 2955. The simple and economical utility tractor was produced until 1998. A low-profile version known as the 6400L was also made. JOHN DEERE 6400 Specs
The 85-horsepower (63.4 kW) JD 6400 is fitted with a JOHN DEERE CD4045 turbocharged diesel engine. This four-cylinder, 4.5-litre engine is liquid cooled and includes a fuel pump. The standard JOHN DEERE SyncroPlus transmission on the tractor is the fully synchronised. Certain used JOHN DEERE 6400 tractors may have optional JOHN DEERE PowrQuad transmission, a partial power shift alternative with four gears in four synchronised ranges and a power shuttle. This offers operators 16 forward and reverse gears, compared to 12 forward and four reverse gears on the standard model. Other JOHN DEERE 6400 specifications include a Category II three-point hitch with lower link control and a rear lift capacity of 5,915 pounds (or 2,683 kilograms). The 6400 JOHN DEERE has two- or four-wheel drive. Closed-centre pressure flow compensated hydraulics, hydrostatic power steering, and hydraulic wet disc brakes are also included. JOHN DEERE 620, 640NSL and 640SL loaders are compatible with this farm tractor, as well as other JOHN DEERE 6400 equipment.

Part of the 6000 Series of tractors, the JOHN DEERE 6400 tractor is larger than the JOHN DEERE 6300. Two-wheel drive versions weight between 7,607 and 8,114 pounds (3,450 and 3,680 kg) depending on whether or not a cab is included. Four-wheel drive versions weight 8,246 pounds (3,740 kg) with only a roll-over protective structure and 8,754 pounds (3,970 kg) with a cab. The JOHN DEER 6400 has a wheelbase of 94.5 inches or 240 centimetres.
