Bulldozers Development & Uses
The term bulldozer originally referred to an attachment for tractors consisting of a thick metal plate. These were developed in the early 20th century and over time became synonymous with the vehicles that carried them. A major step forward came with the introduction of hydraulics, enabling the application of downward force, as well as better control of the blade. Today bull dozers are used extensively in the demolition and construction industries, but are also used in a wide variety of applications in which earthmoving capabilities are required, such as road construction equipment, logging equipment and mining.
The main tools of bull dozer are the blade and the ripper. Bulldozer blades are generally available in three major types. The most common is the universal or U blade, which is curved so that more material can be held. The straight or S blade is shorter and can therefore be used for fine grading. A combination or SU blade has only a slight curvature and is particularly useful for pushing piles of coarse material. Blades can be fitted straight across the front of the vehicle or at an angle. Tilt cylinders may be used to vary the angle of the blade while in motion. Rippers are fitted to the back of the bulldozer and are used to break up the ground into rubble.
