Overhead Crane - Lifting Device for Industrial Settings
Most factory buildings have an overhead crane. These can also be called an “underslung crane” or a “bridge crane”. The name is based on the structure of the crane: it looks like a bridge. Two stable constructions are found on either side of the workspace, and the cross beam upon which the crane travels, is connected by the two side structures. A Goliath or gantry crane is very similar to a bridge crane, but they stand on supports containing wheels. With bridge cranes, the cross beam lies directly on the crane runway.
Bridge / Overhead Crane Safty
A bridge crane requires a stable track. These are most commonly projected out from the concrete masonry. However, it is not a big problem if this design is not used, as a workspace can be equipped with this type of crane using simple steel beams. The crane runway usually runs along the length of the hall, which depicts the x-axis of the working space of the crane. The overhead crane has a really simple structure. One or two bridge elements span over the intended crane runway, which is where the trolley is. A lifting device is connected to the trolley. The direction of the bridge and the trolley’s runway depicts the y-axis of the bridge crane. This is usually the width of the hall. The direction in which the load is lifted is determined by the pull of the trolley. This is the z-axis of the crane. This means that all areas within a hall could be reached. Just like gantry cranes, bridge cranes are characterised by the fact that they move their loads within their focus areas. Thereby, they are very safe and do not cause any damage to the load. The safety of overhead cranes makes them ideal for many uses. Tower cranes, on the other hand, could fall over if they are overloaded. The bridge crane also doesn’t take up any space within a workspace; it is not in the way, when not being used.
Working with an Overhead Crane
This type of crane is operated by driver cabs, cables or remote control. Operators should have completed at least one in-house training day with the crane before operating it independently. The basic operating principles can be learned very quickly but there is a lot to learn in terms of the necessary precautions for safely operating a crane. It is very important to practice moving goods quietly and without vibration. It is particularly important to learn which goods can be carried and which cannot. Most accidents with cranes occur because of limited knowledge in this area. For example, cylinder trolleys for blow torches or welding equipment can only be lifted with specially customised lifting devices. Even though it seems simple, working with a crane cannot be underestimated.
Sheet Lifters used with Overhead Crane
One of the popular types of overhead crane uses is the sheet lifters, a crane attachment that specilized in liftion metal sheets or any other material sheets. This sepsifice type for creane, the sheet lifters can be attached to almost every overhead crane or bridge crane out there.
Maintaining an Overhead Crane
A bridge crane is a heavy-duty piece of equipment, which is exposed to very high levels of wear and tear along its whole structure. This is particularly the case with the heavy components such as slabs, coils or steel pipes. A regular, or at least annual, check up is required for the operation of the crane. Due to its simple construction, the crane can be repaired with relatively few resources. Depending on the circumstances, many components have a limited working lifespan. This is particularly the case for the lifting equipment, like the rope and stops. When buying a second hand crane, it is important to make sure that these components are well documented. If not, they should be exchanged. It is also important to look for visible damages when buying a used crane. For example, if the cross-beams are crooked, these cannot be used. Maintenance work must be undertaken by professional maintenance technicians. Cranes have special lubrication points than need to be regularly tended to. The working lifespan of the crane will significantly increase, if this is done regularly and correctly.
