Sawmills are used to process round wood and transform it into cut timber. In addition to sawing, there are also other machines available for processes like milling and planing, special tools for removing the bark and impregnation, and also delivery equipment. On TradeMachines you can find used sawmills up for auction.
The structure and function of a saw mill
For separating all the timber in a saw mill, head saws, bandsaws and sometimes circular saws are used, due to the large dimensions of the workpieces. Head saws use numerous cuts that are all parallel to one another, and are particularly suited for the first cut used to separate raw logs. Due to their continuous cut, bandsaws create cleaner cuts than head saws. Circular saws also run continuously, but the required size of the saw blade can be problematic when using these types of saws in a saw mill. Modern sawing machines can also be combined with other sawing tools. Removing bark is a special process where a very thin layer needs to be removed from a more or less irregularly formed body.
How are the machines in sawmilling used?
The use of sawing machines is relatively restricted, due to their special applications. Processing large round logs is the first step required after the timber has been felled. Saw mills are used by the forestry sector and companies that specialise their operations on processing raw timber. One of the biggest differentiating factors between the different saw mills is whether they use stationary or mobile machines. A mobile saw mill has the advantage, that it can work in close proximity to where the timber is sourced, which prevents the need for transporting the very long, round logs. This also means that waste products, like bark and saw chips can, under the right circumstances, be used on site for soil improvement. However, the cutting capacities of mobile machines are more limited. Therefore, mobile saw mill machines are more suited for smaller operations.
What type of machines are used in sawmills?
In addition to wood saws, there are a variety of machines used to process wood workpieces in saw mills including: splitting wedges; planers; milling machines; machines for removing the stems and the bark off of trees; drying machines; and machines for transportation and delivering the logs and cut timber. Transportation is usually done by tipping and pushing. The delivery machines in a wood saw mill need to be adjusted to fit the dimensions, i.e. weight and length, of the timber. After the wood is cut, the wood needs to be dried. Usually special stacking machines are used to stack the cut wood for drying. For forced drying processes, there are machines like the vacuum dryer. Special packaging machines are used to prepare products that need to be distributed. At first, it is important to sort the cut timber. This is determined either by their shape or the quality of the timber. Some of the deciding criteria includes ensuring that the timber is free from knots and damage, that could have occurred during the sawing process. For timber that needs to arrive at the end user in a largely raw condition and be processed there, the impregnation process can already be undertaken in a saw mill for sale. This includes wood used for roofs, like rafters and roof battens, and also construction wood, that is used as an auxiliary material during construction. Impregnation is used to protect wood from damage, e.g. from mould or decay, that would occur if the wood got wet or was attacked by insects.Pressure impregnation machines can be used for impregnation. Another machine that is not directly used for woodworking, but can be used as an auxiliary material in saw mills is an extraction system, which is used to move the wood chips into silos. For the maintenance of saws, sharpening cycles using sharpening and levelling machines are used.
Who produces the machines for sawmills?
The different types of machines, that are used in saw mills are produced by BRAUN, BRUKS, BÄUERLE, CAMBIO, CANALI, ESTERER, EWD, HAAS, HOLTEC, HOLZHEUER, KALLFASS, KLÖCKNER, LANG EBERL, LINCK, MÖHRINGER, NICOLSON, PAUL, R&E, RAIMANN, RESCH, RUDNICK & ENNERS, SERRA, STINGL, VALON KONE, VECOPLAN, VOLLMER and WOODMIZER.
On TradeMachines, you can easily find used saw mills for sale that meet your needs and expectations in terms of quality, reliability, and of course price.
