Planing Machines in Metalworking Machinery Auctions
Like shaping machines, planing machines are also basically used for producing flat surfaces in various planes. As in shaping machines, during the planing process as well the length and position of the stroke can be adjusted and only single point cutting tools are used for material removal. Both shaping and planing machines can also be exploited to produce large curved surfaces by employing suitable attachments. For machining grooves in curved sections, form tools are utilized in both the machines. Also most importantly both the machining processes work based on the same cutting principle. Even though there are striking similarities between the two processes, there are a few notable differences between the two of them. In planing machine, instead of the tool, the work piece is given a reciprocatory action thereby responsible for the fast cutting motion and instead of the job, the tool is given the slow feed motion while in shaping machines, it is vice versa. When compared to shaping machines, planer machines are much larger and more rugged in construction and are generally used for machining large jobs with longer stroke length and heavy cuts. A metal power planer machine is also more productive than a shaping machine.
The planing machine has a relatively simpler kinematic system which enables the transmission and transformation of rotary motion of the main motor into reciprocating motion of the large work table and the slow transverse feed motions (both horizontal and vertical) of the tools. The reciprocation of the table, which imparts cutting motion to the job, is attained by the rack and pinion mechanism. The rack is fitted with the table at its bottom surface and the pinion is fitted on the output shaft of the speed gear box. This kind of arrangement not only enables to change the number of stroke per minute but is also responsible for the quick return of the table thus reducing the time taken for the return stroke. The tool head which holds the cutting tools can be moved horizontally along the cross rail by screw nut system and the cross rail is supported by the column of the machine. Just like the ones used in turning process, the cutting tool used for material removal is a single point cutting tool. The only difference is that the cutting tool for planing must be more rigid as the tool is not subjected to any kind of reciprocatory motion and just feed motion. Also higher tool rigidity is required to withstand the higher impact cutting forces. The clearance angle of the tool also must be bigger to avoid plunging of the cutting tool into the machined surface during the quick return of the ram over the work piece.
Planing machines can be classified into two types as open side planers and double-column planers. The open side planer, also called as the single column planer has a single column supporting the cross rail on which the tool head is mounted. Width of the parts that can be machined in a single column planer is larger owing to the configuration of the machine. A double column planer has two columns, one on either side of the bed and the worktable. Just like in an open side planer, the columns support the cross rail on which one or more tool heads are mounted. Rigidity and robustness of the double column planers is quite high when compared to open type planers because of the presence of two columns but it has a limitation in the width of the work piece that can be handled in the planer machine.
All the operations that can be done in shaping machines can be performed in a planing machine as well. But larger size and stroke length and higher rigidity enable the planing machines to do more heavy duty work on large jobs and long surfaces. The productivity of the planing machines is also far superior when compared to shaping machines for longer and faster stroke, heavy cuts. There is also possibility of simultaneously using a number of tools in a electric planer which further enhances the production capacity of the planing machine leading to a great amount of reduction in lead time. The most common application of planers is the machining of salient features like the principal surfaces and guide ways of beds and tables of various universally used industrial machines like lathes, milling machines, grinding machines, broaching machines, shapers and planing machines itself etc. Besides this the planers are also utilized for machining long parallel T slots, ‘V’ and inverted ‘V’ type guide ways. The power planers are also employed for few critical machining activities like helical grooving on large rods, long and wide two dimensional curved surfaces and making repetitive oil grooves etc. with the help of suitable special attachments.
