A mortise machine is a woodworking machine used to punch both rectangular and square holes on pieces of timber called mortises. Compared to use of hands, it is faster and less tiresome. It is also quieter than a router. These advantages coupled with its ability to form perfect square and rectangular holes that pair well with tenons makes a mortise and tenon machine the preferred tool for many professional woodworkers.
How Do Mortising Machines Work?
Mortising machine works effectively on a rock solid platform that effectively bears down on the cut. If a bench top model is used, a clamp or bolt is used to tightly hold the mortiser on the bench. This is because there is a tendency of the mortise machine to tip when the mortises start being hogged out. A cone-shaped stone is then used to sharpen the chisel's inside cutting edges and a flat stone to touch up the chisel's outside faces. To prevent a zigzag pattern from forming, the chisel is kept parallel to the fence. Zigzag patterns normally weaken the joints and are, therefore, completely undesirable. In addition, a file is used to sharpen the auger bit especially on the flutes of the bit and leading edges. For excellent work, the mortising machine should be a third of the thickness of the board while its depth should be between two thirds and a half of the board's width. Using stop blocks, the start and end holes are positioned and then a scrap piece is clamped on the work bench in order to support the long boards. After doing these, boring starts with the end of the mortise. Thereafter the interior of the mortise is removed leaving very little edges between the cuts. The work is then finished by removing the bridges.
Area of Operation
Like many other woodworking machines, mortisers can be used in many areas. The most common of these is wood workshops. They are particularly popular with professional wood workers because of their efficiency and high quality work. However, amateurs about to start workshops also find them helpful. They can also be used by hobbyists of wood works.
