Metal milling machines use rotary cutters with multiple cutting points to remove material from a workpiece that is being fed at an angle with the axis of the tool. In this way parts can be machined to precise shapes and sizes. The milling process can be split into two different types of processes : one is where the workpiece is moved, while the milling head is fixed in place; the second is where the milling head is moved and the workpiece is clamped into place. Boring machines are a combination of these two principles, but their milling heads can only be moved in one direction. The milling process is undertaken completely by the milling head. In order to be able to safely and precisely process large workpieces (e.g. several square meters), there needs to be a fully-movable milling head. This tool is exposed to continuous stress due to the large strokes and high level of pressure required for large workpieces. This would lead to a loss in quality with a SCARA, or any other type of free-arm guided milling machines. A milling machine for large workpieces needs to have a high level of precision and stiffness. This is what portal milling machines offer. One of the most used is the CNC milling machine but for some tasks a used manual milling machine can be very effective. Lathes can be combined with vertical milling machine.
