Metalworking machines include a lot more than is commonly thought. Metalworking machines do not just encompass bending and milling metal products. It also includes surface treatment, refining and changing the material characteristics of a workpiece. These machines are usually stable therefore to buy used metalworking machinery would be a good idea to save costs.
There are three different types of metalworking processes. “Forming” within metal production includes everything that has to do with casting metal to produce finished products. This includes casting, injection moulding and die casting processes. These differ greatly in terms of their structure, type and size. Cast products are produced in a foundry. The prepared molds are filled with liquid metal directly out of the furnace using heavy lathes. This work can be undertaken with remote control, but it cannot be done automatically with the proper equipment. Die casting machines only have a small supply for molten metal, but this is continually refilled. They can automatically produce a large amount of finished die cast products.
The second form of metalworking is usually called “
forming”. This is when plastic or cold pre-products are shaped using a specific application of pressure. This includes bending, forging and pressing processes. There are a large number of metalworking machines, which could be used to undertake these processes.
The third metal forming process is separation, which is undertaken through processes without a tool including turning, milling, cutting, burning and sawing, or when using equipment, punching.
The treatment of metal surfaces is undertaken to protect the workpiece against corrosion, for aesthetic reasons and to improve the mechanical characteristics of the material. These processes include grinding, targeted roughening and polishing. There are various metal working machines used for these processes including grinding machines and sand blasters. Galvanizing and pigment based processes are used to coat metal. The galvanizing processes are characterized by their ability to produce permanent surfaces. Cast and forged products usually do not have the desired characteristics and so after the forming processes, annealing and hardening processes are used.
